2)   Promotion of implementation science research across Lundquist through collaboration with partner institutions.

3)   Identifying opportunities for cross-institutional implementation science research collaboration.

4)   Discussing ongoing or completed DHS projects using implementation science methods.

The symposium will also include a panel discussion on strategies to conduct implementation science research.

Meet the Speakers

Keynote Speaker

Brian S. Mittman, PhD
Research Scientist III
Division of Health Services Research & Implementation Science

Topic: “Current concepts in Implementation Science”

Dr. Brian S. Mittman is a research scientist in the Department of Research & Evaluation with additional affiliations at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the University of Southern California, and the University of California, Los Angeles, where he co-leads the UCLA Clinical and Translational Science Institute Implementation and Improvement Science Initiative.

Dr. Mittman is a founding member of the U.S. Institute of Medicine (IoM) Forum on the Science of Quality Improvement and Implementation and chaired the NIH peer review panel on Dissemination and Implementation Research in Health in 2007 and 2010.  He directed VA’s Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI) from 2002-2004.  He serves on the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Methodology Committee, AAMC Advisory Panel on Research, NIH NHLBI Board of External Experts, and advisory boards for additional US and non-US research programs.

Daniel DeUgarte, MD
Professor of Clinical Surgery
Chief, Division of Pediatric Surgery at Harbor-UCLA

Topic: “Implementation of Opioid Stewardship Across a Health System”

Dr. Daniel DeUgarte is a Professor of Clinical Surgery at UCLA and Division Chief of Pediatric Surgery at Harbor-UCLA.  He is a graduate of Harvard College and UCLA School of Medicine.  He completed general surgery residency at UCLA and pediatric surgery fellowship at the University of Michigan prior to returning to UCLA, where he has been on faculty since 2007.  He is board-certified in pediatric surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Pediatrics.  He is also a member of the American Pediatric Surgical Association, the University of California Fetal Consortium, and numerous other surgical societies. 

Dr. DeUgarte received a Master of Science in Clinical Research in 2013, and he has been a site investigator for several federally-funded studies including CODA, a multi-institutional randomized controlled trial comparing non-operative and operative management of appendicitis funded by the Patient Centered-Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI).  He serves as Co-Chair for the Los Angeles County – Department of Health Services and Harbor-UCLA Pain Management Committees leading effort in opioid stewardship.   He was awarded an NIH CTSI implementation science grant to reduce opioid use in post-operative patients. 

Emiley Chang, MD
Assistant Professor of Medicine
Geriatrician, Harbor-UCLA

Topic: “Improving Chronic Pain Management in the Safety Net: Lessons learned from the Integrative Medicine Health Coach training program”

Dr. Emiley Chang is a geriatrician at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. She graduated from Stanford University School of Medicine, with an additional MPH degree from UC Berkeley. After training in internal medicine at UC Davis Medical Center, she completed a subspecialty geriatrics fellowship at UCLA. She then went on to complete a NRSA research fellowship in General Internal Medicine at UCLA. During this time, she obtained an MS in Health Policy and Management at the Fielding School of Public Health in health services research methodology, biostatistics, and social marketing. Her community-partnered projects focused on racial/ethnic health disparities, patient-physician communication, and team-based models of care for hypertension and advance care planning. Dr. Chang has always been interested in integrative medicine as a means of promoting healthy aging and improving quality of life. She actively collaborates with the UCLA Center for East-West Medicine and is currently designing an interdisciplinary integrative medicine program to provide comprehensive pain management within the county health system.
